The Best Carafes, Decanters and Jugs
A carafe is the simplest upgrade you can make to any table. Decant your wine and it opens up. Pour your water from glass instead of the tap and it feels intentional. Serve coffee from a proper vessel and breakfast becomes a ritual.
This is our guide to the best carafes, decanters, and serving jugs available in the UK — for wine, water, coffee, and everything in between.
Wine Decanters
Decanting isn't pretentious — it's practical. Pouring wine into a decanter exposes it to air, softening tannins and releasing aromas. Young reds benefit enormously. Even a £7 supermarket red tastes better decanted for 20 minutes.
Best Wine Decanters
| Decanter | Style | Price | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bormioli Rocco Misura | Classic carafe shape | ~£10 | Everyday decanting on a budget |
| Le Chateau Wine Decanter | Wide-base, hand-blown | ~£20 | Most popular on Amazon UK, excellent value |
| LSA International Wine Carafe | Mouth-blown, organic shape | ~£30 | Beautiful centrepiece, gifting |
| Riedel Amadeo Decanter | Sculptural, statement piece | ~£150 | Serious wine lovers, display |
| Dartington Crystal Decanter | British crystal, classic | ~£35 | Traditional elegance, wedding gifts |
Choosing the Right Decanter
- Wide base = more surface area = faster aeration. Best for young, tannic reds (Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Syrah).
- Narrow/standard shape = gentler aeration. Better for lighter reds (Pinot Noir, Beaujolais) and older wines.
- With stopper = useful if you want to decant ahead of time and seal it until dinner.
Cleaning Decanters
Red wine stains glass. Get decanter cleaning beads (around £8) — stainless steel balls that swirl inside and remove residue without scratching. Alternatively, a dedicated decanter brush (around £6) works well for standard shapes.
Water Carafes
Pouring water from a glass carafe instead of straight from the tap transforms a weeknight dinner. It's a small thing, but it signals care. Keep one in the fridge and you always have cold, presentable water ready.

The Bedside Carafe
A carafe and tumbler set for the bedside table — water within arm's reach, looking elegant doing it. The LSA International Carafe & Tumbler Set (around £20) is the classic choice. Perfect housewarming gift.
Coffee Carafes and Servers
Brewed coffee deserves a proper home. Don't leave it sitting in the machine — pour it into a thermal server to keep it hot without overcooking, or use a glass server to show off that beautiful pour-over.
Best Coffee Servers
| Server | Type | Price | Best For |

| Hario V60 Range Server | Glass, 600ml | ~£15 | Pour-over, visual appeal |

Juice, Cordial and Cocktail Jugs
Don't neglect the everyday. A good glass jug makes squash look like lemonade, turns a jug of Pimm's into a centrepiece, and brings order to the breakfast table.
Our Picks
- Bormioli Rocco Frigoverre Jug — fridge-friendly, hermetic lid. Around £10.
- Dartington Crystal Water Jug — traditional British crystal. Around £25.
- Kitchen Craft Glass Jug — simple, sturdy, family-sized. Around £8.
Carafe Care
- Hand wash when possible. Dishwashers can cloud glass over time, especially lead-free crystal.
- Dry upside down on a clean tea towel. Avoid leaving water to pool and mark the base.
- Store upright with the stopper removed to prevent trapped moisture.
- For stubborn stains: Fill with warm water, a splash of white vinegar, and a tablespoon of uncooked rice. Swirl vigorously. The rice acts as a gentle abrasive.
